The popularity of Black actors in the media and popular culture is often discussed with mixed results, and the latest data suggests the industry may not be doing much to foster diversity in the face of such a large influx of new talent.
In a survey by NPD Group, the leading market research firm, respondents were asked what they think of the state of diversity in film and television, and nearly half of them (47 percent) said they would prefer more Black actors onscreen.
The survey, which was conducted between January and March, found that the percentage of black actors who say they would like more Black faces onscreen grew from 16 percent in 2016 to 20 percent in 2017, but the number of black actresses who say the same percentage dropped from 15 percent to 14 percent.
That means that, on average, there are more than three Black actors per screen for every one Black actress.
That’s not a huge disparity, as other recent studies have found that, overall, there’s a huge difference in the number and diversity of Black faces in film.
For example, in 2017 alone, there were 13 Black actors to one Black female actor, and 13 to one in 2020.
In 2015, there was a similar disparity, with just three Black actresses to one male actress.
The numbers for 2017 also reflect the fact that the 2016 Oscar nominations are not as representative of the year’s Black moviegoing audience, as only seven films made the final nominations.
This is all good news for Black filmmakers, but as the popularity of actors with Black faces has exploded over the past few years, the question remains: How can the industry promote diversity in its workforce in a way that is accessible to all actors, regardless of their race?NPD Group’s data indicates that, in general, diversity is more important to Black actors than other actors, though not necessarily the most important factor.
“Black actors are more likely than other Hollywood actors to be nominated for an Oscar for best picture and for best director, which is why it’s important for the industry to focus on those areas,” said Andrew Kliman, NPDGroup’s senior director of research.
“But the key is that it’s about the performers and how we can support them and help them succeed.”
For example:While it is difficult to get a realistic picture of the demographics of the film industry’s black audience, Klimam said, “there is certainly evidence of increasing diversity in movie production, casting, directing and production.”
Kliman also pointed out that the industry’s focus on diversity is not just for black actors, but also for all actors.
“We see it in everything from diversity in roles in shows to hiring,” he said.
“There is no denying that there are a lot of opportunities for actors of color in the entertainment industry.”
The industry’s diversity efforts aren’t just about attracting new talent, though.
In 2017, Nadeem Akbar, a director who’s directed multiple Oscar-nominated films, said he’s been impressed by the industry since he began directing.
“I have no problem with a film that is about Black people,” Akbar told The Huffington Post.
“The way that they are portrayed in films, the way that there’s diversity in their scenes and the way they’re represented, that’s very important.
It’s a matter of making films that are respectful of all those things, and it’s not just a matter about Black characters.
There are so many Black characters out there.
It really changes the way you approach your work.””
I have seen the diversity of people that I work with as diverse as a Black family.
It really changes the way you approach your work.”
Akbar, who is also the author of “A Black Family: How a Black Family Survives in Hollywood,” is a longtime critic of the industry.
He said he has a hard time understanding why there are so few Black people in the industry when so many are making a living off the back of their talent.
“The only reason we don’t have more Black people is because of the fact of the white guys in the room, and I think that’s a very important thing to consider,” he added.
“It is a problem, but we can’t fix it by being too specific or too specific.”
Akbarr said the industry needs to take more care to make sure its cast and crew is diverse and has the necessary skills.
“One of the biggest things that I would do is make sure that we’re making sure that every actor is working with the right people.
It should be about who they are and what they can do,” he explained.
While it’s possible that diversity in Hollywood could help the industry attract more Black talent, Akbar said the issue is not going away anytime soon.
“We’re not going to have a Black generation,” he stated.
“That’s just not going be true.
We have to work on that.
We’re not getting there.
We can’t continue to ignore
